"We've got a lot to be glad for"

Jumping jee willickers its been a long time since I've updated this. I don't even check it much anymore, let alone do I expect anyone else to check if I update.

I went to see a great concert tonight. Rock Plaza central (Evalyn Perry opened and she is wonderful too). Rock Plaza was great but their mix wasn't very good. They do a lot of vocal harmonies that rattle your insides and give me goosebumps.

Their lyrics are simple but poignant. They have two mantras that I enjoy and which are now stuck in my head. The first is "be joyfull, my children be joyfull" the other is "we've got a lot to be glad for"

I think both are great but it is the later that strikes me this evening. It seems to me that we all have so much to be glad for but rarely to we stop to appreciate that fact. There is so much going on in this world. So much shit transpires around our homes, in the streets or simply at a distance on the news. The world is falling apart and we are playing politics with the solutions to ending the degradation of our environment, stopping violence in homes and in war. We value oil more then lives and we care more about image then we do about improving the quality of life for those less fortunate. Image is everything trust your thirst.

While this gripe session sounds to be a dig at humanity and a pretentious attempt to pretend that I am above all the shit that stops us from improving our world, it is not.  I truly believe that it is only by juxtaposition that we can truly understand what we have and why we ought to be thankful. WE HAVE A LOT TO BE  GLAD FOR!!!!

Despite all the hate, the fear, the degradation of others and the ignorance that we foster and harbour in our communitiees the grand scheme of things of improving.

I for one have too many people who love me and challenge me, and teach me how to be a better person and how to serve other. Without these people I would perhaps not be so confident in agreeing with Rock Plaza in saying " we have a lot to be glad for", but we certainly do.

Reality Check

MMP

On Wednesday (October 10) you'll have a chance to mark your ballot for a new form of representation called mixed-member proportional (MMP). Lots of fallacies are circulating about the proposed system; don't get taken in. Here's the lowdown on why you should be a yes person.

MYTH • MMP will lead to chaotic legislative gridlock thanks to consistently weak minority governments.

REALITY • Under MMP, parties know they'll gain no more or fewer seats than deserved, so they'll need to find coalition partners and work within a culture of negotiation and compromise. Most Western democracies moved to PR in the last century.

• Critics always point to Italy and Israel as examples of political chaos, but 81 nations use PR. How come naysayers don't talk about Germany, Switzerland, Sweden or the dozens of stable PR governments?

MYTH • MMP will foster extremist parties whose nasty policies could be adopted by bigger parties in exchange for support.

REALITY • Small parties out of step with the public's thinking will remain small and uninfluential in perpetuity.

• Any major party seeking support from a tinier one by adopting an unseemly policy will be punished by voters.

MYTH • The increased number of seats in the legislature from 103 to 129 will put an unnecessary burden on taxpayers.

REALITY • MMP will merely restore the legislature to its size in the 1990s.

• Managing taxpayer dollars isn't about the tiny portion of the budget paid to legislators, but about how the province's $89 billion is spent.

• A strong opposition and more MPPs will mean more monitoring of committees.

MYTH • Party appointment lists will lead to cronyism.

REALITY • If the process isn't transparent, the party will face a membership rebellion.

• All four major parties have made public statements that they will use democratic processes.

MYTH • Our provincial government works. Why fix what isn't broken?

REALITY • The current system distorts the will of the voters, produces phony majorities, fails to produce accountable governments, giving us entrenched governments or wild swings but not responsive government.

• Many people feel apathetic and cynical because they believe their votes don't make a difference. Nearly 40 per cent of those eligible to vote in Ontario don't bother casting a ballot.

"Got to get myself connected"

Ten Reasons to Vote for Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) in the Referendum

1.  More choice for voters: one ballot, two votes

With MMP, you cast a vote for your local candidate AND another vote for your preferred political party.

2.  More power to voters:  everyone matters

Even if you don’t elect someone in your riding, your party vote will still help elect at-large candidates. Every party will compete for your vote no matter where you live.

3.  More options for voters

Voters will be able to consider the larger established parties, as usual, but also a number of smaller, newer, innovative parties.

4.  Fairer results in elections

Parties will get only the seats and power they deserve – no more, no less.

5. Stronger representation

With both riding representatives and at-large representatives, voters will be able to call on more than one elected official in their region for assistance.

6. More diverse representation

Parties will learn that they attract more votes by nominating a diverse list of at-large candidates – including a good balance of women and men, and visible minorities.

7. More accountability to voters

Every voter helps elect someone, which strengthens accountability, and majority governments can only be formed by those representing the majority.

8.  Better government and less concentration of power

Parties will be forced to negotiate and compromise, usually by forming coalition governments, which tempers the power of the premier and party leaders.

9.  Citizens’ Assembly recommended MMP

MMP is recommended by the independent Ontario Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform, a body of 103 randomly chosen voters who studied and deliberated for eight months on the best voting system for Ontario.

10.  Old guard doesn’t like it

The MMP system empowers voters and gives us more choice, fairer results and stronger representation – not what the old boys club wants, but what all Ontarians deserve.

Three Reasons Why Ontario Needs a New Voting System

1.     Too little choice

Many voters live in ridings dominated by one party where they cannot elect someone from the party they actually prefer.

2.     Most votes elect no one

In a typical Ontario election, more than two million voters cast votes that elect no one.

3.     Distorted election results and phony majorities

A party winning only 40 per cent of the votes often captures 60 per cent of the seats. Ontario is usually governed by a party the majority voted against.

The Big Lie About MMP

The defenders of the status quo have been repeating a statement about MMP that is fundamentally wrong: that the new at-large seats would be filled by “appointment” rather than by election.

Set aside for a moment the obvious question: why would a Citizens’ Assembly of Ontario voters propose something so stupid? Because they didn’t.

Every legislator under MMP would be elected – put in office by attracting votes and removed from office by losing votes. Three of the party leaders have already said their parties would use a democratic process to nominate their at-large candidates (standard practice in all MMP countries). Those candidates are then elected according to how successful they and their parties are at attracting votes.

Electing candidates to fill at-large seats, as well as riding seats, gives voters stronger and better representation than we have now – which is why the Citizens’ Assembly recommends MMP.

Voting for MMP Puts You In Good Company

"oh when the dog bites, when the bee stings"

Hi SLC (sounds like canada ,

I’m listening to your program right now but I should better describe it as trying to listen to your program. I know its insensitive to request that one artist not be played especially when your a public broadcaster but PLEASE Don't play Nickelback. There is so much better music to associate with. So much more that deserves your attention and the attention of your listeners.

So please Never Play Nickelback Again.

Sincerely,

Bryn Ossington

"Your face is all over the six o'clock news"

In the News:
Canadian girl Erin McCarthy  is reunited with her long lost mother and sister. After 25 years of being half the world apart Erin returns home to realize that nurture has taken over and  nature doesn't seem to effect hight of children. Erin blamed her excessive growth on the hormones in Canadian water but her mother rejected her and sent her back to Canada.  When asked for comments McCarthy only had this to say, "In Canada Squirrels and cats love me no matter how tall I am. My mother can just get over it or we will never be a family again." She then turned and cried yelling "Im tall mamy! Im tall!" before going into shock and speaking in tongues. when asked for comment McCarthy's mother stated "elle est stupido".

"All that you touch, all that you see, all that you taste, all that you feel "

It must be years since Ive had a nightmare. I think the difference between a shitty dream and a nightmare is the vividness and detail. I had one last night that is still fucking with me. Besides that the rest of my dreams are just fucked. Its really scary to wake up and and need to comb through what is real and what is not. Its surreal and scary as fuck.

"where do we go, from here"

Ok its late, I should be studying if not sleeping but this video has been really hitting me all day. Maybe its because im simple that a dancing man could make me feel so warm inside or maybe its the recognition that its simple shit like a man dancing a stupid dance all over the world that makes life worth all the shitty times. This video makes me jealous, happy and sad. I like the kids dancing with him best in Rwanda. Its always interesting to me to think of places like that becuase when I think of places like Rwanda I think genocide and human rights violations. But here is a group of young kids who probably know more about life than I will ever dancing carelessly with some crazzy ass foreign guy. Its hart warming to me. makes me want to do a jig somewhere new!

"... get your freak on! ... Get your freak on!"

well I found away for all my apathetic friends to become peace activists.

"One is the lonliest... Number!"

I visited my friend Joe tonight. Joe and I are quite unlikely friends. We come from different backgrounds and enjoy different lifestyls. Specifically my not doing endless amounts of drunks or being involved in organized crime. However I think the fact that we are so different is quite refreshing. I know that we are friends because we enjoy each other and the differences we bring each other, Sans judgement. Its nice, to know that someones likes your company for nothing more than company. I think this relationship would confuse the likes of socrates. But ultimately its nice. Despite the fear that his friends make me feel. It was a short visit however. When there are no exams I will be more fun.

Cats are funny. Sometimes I think they know when Im down and they cuddle more. But really they just want something. Even if its a warm place to sit.

Study study, exam exam....

"People try to put us down"

Buddha was so postmodern

By becoming attached to names and forms, not realising that they have no more basis than the activities of the mind itself, error rises and the way to emancipation is blocked. -Buddha

I think Im about done with school and the life of a student. Im no where near done but I've had enough.

Here are some quotes I like, because I like to waste time.

Love is a dirty trick played on us to achieve the continuation of the species.
William Somerset Maugham (2)

Cynic: A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.
Ambrose Bierce (41)

Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible player.
Albert Einstein (31)

I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.
Winston Churchill (20)

A family is a place where minds come in contact with one another. If these minds love one another the home will be as beautiful as a flower garden. But if these minds get out of harmony with one another it is like a storm that plays havoc with the garden. that plays havoc with the garden. - Buddha

"happiness Is a warm gun"

Nietzsche's father was a minister. His mother was not.

The true man wants two things: danger and play. For that reason he wants woman, as the most dangerous plaything.

Friedrich Nietzsche (5)

I have fallen into a pit of dispair. the government refers to it as post secondary education.

"its a complicated situation"

I think that last post has been taken a bit to literally. But thanks all.

"life handed us a paycheck, we said 'we worked harder than this! "

Bitches are cold.

Im begining to think that there is a secret tribunal of women who sit around and scheme about how to make men's lives miserable. Or at least the nice guys. As one converted former nice guy told me tonight assholes got it good.

How can we defend women when you all have secret plots and your all fucking crazy. generalizations aside....

"You know, I simply cannot understand people"

today has been ruined. I bought wine gums that are fake. They just taste like grose wine gums. This is not acceptable.

There is a common trend amongst people I know to run away from things because they dont feel right. This annoys me. I dont know how I attract all of you but I dont and I love you none the less.  All to often i hear that people need change or need a new environment, they need to be by themselves so they can figure out life and be happy. The only person I can think of that this doesnt apply to is Matt J. King of Wootown.

To the rest of you I will remind you what John Lennon once told me. "Life is what happens when your busy making other plans". Everyone focuses so much on the bad and the things they want to change and forgets about the things that are good. Maybe your job sucks, maybe you need to get away from this stupid university town, but moving, quiting or running away wont get you the happiness you want. Until you can be happy where you are with the people your with because of who you are your fuct. We are all fuct. so everyone just pull up a chair and get used to it. this is life, and like it or not its the only one your getting. So stop looking for happiness or the answers to life's questions elsewhere. If your ever going to find them then you already have them. Your just to busy looking everywhere else. Myself included.

LOVE

"come disconect the dots with me honey!"

so here is my bi annual im poor as fuck post.

turns out im poor as fuck and to help that fact my OSAP will not be in until the end of Oct. is seems that the OSAP people have a fucking clue when students need money to ,, you know, buy text books, food and pay rent. but thats why they get paid the big bucks.

to help my situation my car decided that it was done with breaking the other day. Luckily i was working with my friend from extend a family when we flew through a red light with my break to the floor. There were puddles of break fluid everywhere.. it was awsome. nobody was hurt however and for the most part i got off good considering the no stopping red light, oncomming traffic thing.

However the repairs found oraphases in me that are not typically anatomically represented. I am now poor and in debt to my roomates and im hungry.  if you send me food and or money I will sing and dance for you.

i should do real work

PEACE!!!!
